After Falling Short in Triple OT vs Dana Hills, MATS Finish 9th Overall

After the MATS Men's Varsity Water Polo team's 15-14 loss to Dana Hills in the third and sudden death overtime period, no one would blame the team for being deflated.  But rather than fall victim to disappointment, the MATS turned in three straight impressive victories to finish 9th overall in the North-South Tournament.  The annual battle of the top teams in Northern and Southern California is always highly competitive, with small mistakes often the difference between victory and defeat.  Such was the case in the MATS loss in the first round, as both teams played solid games.

The MATS then easily handled Acalanes on Friday afternoon, then returned on Saturday to face host Menlo-Atherton.  The MATS dominated from the outset, with the game ending 15-9 behind Freshman Tyler Abramson's four goals.  The final game was a well-played contest against Loyola.  The game was tight through three periods, with six lead changes and no lead greater than 2 goals going into the 4th and final period.  The MATS dominated the final period, scoring 2 quick goals and holding Loyola scoreless for the final score of 12-9. Junior Goalkeeper had 9 saves, making numerous and sometimes spectacular saves to anchor the tough MATS defense, and the well-balanced offense featured 8 scorers, led by Seniors Kirchberg (3 goals), Whitsitt (2) and Smudsky (2).

Next up is the final regular season game at Alhambra on Wednesday - then it is on to the NCS!
