Mats vs Campo

Miramonte 25   Campolindo 37

Friday, October 14   ORINDA, CA

Miramonte took a 25-24 lead early in the 4th quarter when Senior Nick Foster took a pass from fellow Senior Tim Tague 75 yards down the right sideline for a Mats’ touchdown.  But Campolindo responded with two fourth quarter touchdowns of their own, and won the battle for Lamorinda bragging rights, 37-25.

Campo has played in the Div 3 State Championship game the past two seasons, and they came into the game having won their last five meetings with the Mats by an average score of 40-8.  In fact none of those five prior contests had been any closer than the 21-point margin in 2012.

Nonetheless, a large and passionate crowd showed up on both sides of the field on an evening that had rain in the forecast.  They were treated to dry weather and an exciting and hard-fought high school rivalry game.

Foster had two first-half touchdown receptions in addition to his fourth quarter heroics.  He finished with 5 receptions for 132 yards. Tague added a third quarter rushing touchdown to his three TD tosses to Foster, and Tim threw for 222 yards.  Mats Junior running back Peter Stehr had 60 yards rushing on 11 carries behind some good O Line blocking.

Senior linebackers Casey McGonigle and Ryan Walker led Mats’ tacklers with 13 and 12, respectively.  Senior D Lineman Caleb Casimere recovered two Campo fumbles for Miramonte.

The Mats pulled out all the stops in trying to reverse their recent fortunes against their rivals.  Miramonte tried on-side kicks on all five of their kickoffs, but Campo managed to retain possession on all five, resulting in short fields for most of their scoring drives.  And the Mats were 0-3 on 2-point conversion attempts.

Much as the defeat stings, the fact is that the Mats played well, and the game was theirs for the taking in the fourth quarter.  And that is a big step in the right direction.
