57-25

Miramonte played perhaps its best game of the season so far in extending their record to 5-0.

Alhambra came into the contest with a 2-2 record, and they proved to be an athletic and fast team who executed very well.  Both teams scored on their first two possessions, and the Mats’ lead was just 14-10 early in the second quarter.  But Nick Foster intercepted a Bulldog pass and took it to The House on a spectacular, highlight reel 70-yard return, and the Matadors never looked back.  The Mats led 31-10 at halftime, and Miramonte extended its lead to 51-10 as the game entered the fourth quarter with the clock running.

For the first time this season, the Mats gained 100 yards rushing, led by Running Back Peter Stehr’s 78 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.  He found big holes all night behind the impressive blocking of Center Nick Rovetti, Guards Carson Lowe and Quinn Rochette, and Tackles Kai Rochette and Teddy Hoxie.  Quarterback Tim Tague added 18 yards rushing and a TD on six carries.

The Matador passing attack was even more productive. Tague completed 19 of 30 passes for 293 yards and three TD’s.  Eight different Mats caught at least one pass, including WR Will Cassriel (5 receptions for 47 yards and a TD), WR Ethan Fischler (4 receptions for 41 yards and a TD), and RB Stehr (3 receptions for 88 yards and a TD).

Meanwhile, the Mat D (which had not allowed a score in more than two games) continued their strong play.  Foster had two interceptions from his Safety position, and fellow Safety Nolan Brown and Cornerback Bill Martin each had one INT.  Brown led the team with 9 tackles.  LB’s Ryan Walker and Sam Walker each recorded 7 tackles, and Foster and DE Robbie Tennant each made 6.

Fischler rounded out the scoring late in the fourth quarter with a 95-yard kickoff return.  He ran untouched down the right sideline behind outstanding blocking by the Mats’ KOR unit.  This brought a huge grin to the face of Special Teams Coach Dave Winford.
